May 8, 2008 (Sawf News) - Arguably the most talented and popular Bollywood actress, Kajol comes through as bitter and sweet, talking about her past films and career ahead.

Don't expect to see Kajol in more than a single film every year, if at all. When she does work in a film, it will only be because the film has a compelling story, she says.

"I won't just grab an offer because it comes from a big banner. I believe in the power of the story more than the storyteller," she told TOI.

Equally important, it will be for a director who understands that her daughter Nysa takes precedence over the film.

"I was born to be a mother. It's my niche in life. And I don't mind if it sounds a little syrupy in this day and age," says Kajol.

Not many Bollywood actresses would get work with an attitude like that, but only because not many Bollywood actresses have Kajol's talent.

However, Kajol is aware that she is pushing her luck close to the brink.

"But if I get any more choosy I won't be working at all," she says. "It's not that I'm extra selective, but I look at a project in its entirety."

Kajol is aware of the limitations of Indian filmmakers and their proclivity to ride roughshod over the script.

Recalling her experience with the film Fanaa she says:

"Earlier I didn't do my friend Karan Johar's Kabhi Alvidaa Na Kehna because I had no time. But then, when Fanaa came to me, it sounded really good. But as it usually happens, it turned out better on paper.

"Like I say, the script is always better than the film. The book is better than the film."

Karan, who is keen to sign Kajol and Shah Rukh Khan for a new film, will probably need to do a lot better with his script this time, than he has done in the past.

Meanwhile, Kajol is set to start work on her next film, Toonpur Ka Superhero, an animation film with human characters, in which she is paired with husband Ajay Devgan.

"We're actually playing ourselves, yes, we'll be Ajay and Kajol. But the cartoon characters get the main roles. It will be healthy competition for me," Kajol jokes.
