July 21, 2008 (Sawf News) - As Shahid Kapoor floundered through a largely clichéd script and Aziz Mirza's desultory direction of Kismat Konnection, Vidya Balan succeeded in infusing the film with some life, despite delivering an uninspired performance herself; a tribute to her awesome talent.

Kismat Konnection has had a disappointing opening and is likely to be counted as a flop against Balan's name. Someone was not interested in the film but it is difficult to say who because along the way the contagion must have spread to the entire cast, all of whom looked disinterested.

The film has its failings but Vidya Balan is not one of them. Vidya did not look too old paired with Shahid, it was Shahid who looked a tad amateurish paired with the more talented Vidya.

The ease with which Vidya faces and emotes in front of the camera is truly astounding. The camera can rest on her face for long spells as she delivers her dialogs in carefully measured tones, speaking as much through her eyes as with her lips.

Vidya has her failings but lack of style or excess of weight are not part of them. Those are as much concoctions of retarded journalists as measures of prevalent sensibilities, or lack thereof.

Vidya's biggest problem is that she arrived in this world, Bollywood in particular, several decades too late. As talented as Waheeda Rehman and Nutan, I think Vidya is doing as good a job as they would have done had they been Vidya's contemporaries.

It is sad but true that Katrina is counted amidst the top female Bollywood stars when actresses like Kajol are still around. Even with Waheeda Rehman and Nutan around, Katrina would have still been at the top, especially with Salman Khan around!

If Vidya can really be faulted it is for her poor choice of films. I wonder if she really reads the script before signing up for a film. The scripting weaknesses in Kismat Konnection, for example, are glaring. While Shahid's character is built well her characterization is cursory and unconvincing. For example, the switch from being at loggerheads with Shahid to becoming his close friend is sudden and jarring.

Aziz Mirza's disinclination to grapple with details is Kismat Konnection's biggest failing and yet Vidya went along with it. Her choice of Heyy Babyy (2007) was also unfortunate.

I don't know why critics are calling the movie bad. It is a simple and beautiful movie, so what if it is slow paced, why do movies have to be fast paced. Don't get this cliched view of critics, they got to spread their wings and try to see what a good movie is all about.
Most of the people I have spoken to (barring Akki fans who only like women being an object of desire and want non-stop action, where their brain does not have to think for even one second), all have really enjoyed it. I am going for a second view purely because it is one of those movies that just grows on you. All performance are good, Shahid is great!! He has the kind of screen presence not many have, of course he is not Pankaj Kapur bt he is very good in his own right in the commercial cinema sense (I don't think any of our Bolly stars are great actors anyway, only people like Naseeruddin Shah, Om Puri, Pankaj Kapur are really good artists).
Anyway, the movie is simple and very nice.
