July 30, 2008 (Sawf News) - Salman Khan may have earned opprobrium for his drinking and temper, but even his detractors acknowledge his large heartedness. Ironically, Salman's friends and family are now as concerned about his generosity as his drink tantrums.
Salman Khan on the sets of 10 Ka Dum is often seen going out of his way to be friendly with the contestants. He not only listens to their grievances but often helps them financially.
The controversial actor's close friends, however, feel that people often take advantage of Salman's emotional nature and generosity. To keep the unscrupulous at a distance from Salman, his family members have appointed two bodyguards to make sure only those deserving of Salman's attention get to meet him.
Recently, a contestant, Habib Mithiborwala, a victim of the 26th July Mumbai flood, appeared on the show. When Salman came to know that the young lad had undergone 40 surgeries and was expected to undergo more, he took him under his care and promised to meet all of his medical expenses.
On another occasion, Salman gifted Rs. 1 lakh to a Mumbai Muncipal Corporation sweeper named, Ghanshyam Baman. A Bachelors drop out, Baman, was eliminated in the knock out round played between two contestants but his zest for life, evident from a spirited jig that he performed with Salman, touched Khan's heart. Salman ordered his driver to fetch his check book on the spot and wrote out a check for Rs 1 lakh!
Salman savors his interaction with the contestants. He recently wrote on his blog, "Though these human books are a little difficult to read, the heart and eyes alone help to read them. What has really surprised me is that my contestants do not hesitate in revealing their personal things in front of the camera. Personal fears and dreams are on display with gay abandon. In certain respects our set becomes a confession room and I am enjoying the role of a confidante."
Salman is, however, aware that people take advantage of his generosity.
"Recently, I decided to fund a life saving operation costing around Rs.9 Lakhs, for a very worthy person. And my doctor adviser arranged for it to take place at Nanavati Hospital. The patient residing in Bandra was a little unhappy that we could not get it done at Lilavati Hospital," he wrote on his blog.
"I believe that this kind of attitude of takings things for granted leads to demanding things not necessary for cure," he added.
Salman vented his frustration in another blog post, but refuses to curb his proclivity to reach out to those in need of his help.
"Despite all this, his charity habit hasn't stopped. A lot of people continue to approach him everyday to have their medical bills cleared from his Being Human foundation," adds an actor friend of Salman.
"His family members have given up on making him understand and have instead appointed bodyguards to screen the people seeking help.
"They were earlier okay with him gifting pricey Rolex watches to his actor friends but he just doesn't know where to stop," the friend concludes.
