September 2, 2008 (Sawf News) - Rahul Bose is as much of a social activist as a film actor. The list of charities that he is associated with is almost as along as his filmography. Factor in his 20-year-rugby career and you start wondering what the man is really about?
Don't ask him the question though. He doesn't talk like a Bollywood star, blending self deprecating humor with incisive wit. Here is an example:
"I don't think I was good enough in Maan Gaye Mughal-E-Azam," he says.
"I think it's important to take responsibility for the lack of appreciation of that film as an actor. That's new too, because it's not something I'm used to. A film with Paresh Rawal, Kay Kay Menon and Pawan Malhotra should have been a happy release at the Box Office. It is not my intention to do one more such comedy in my life," he told TOI recently.
Bose's good neighborly looks belie an actor with an impressive body of work spanning across genres.
The 41-year-old actor features in a cameo in Tahaan which releases in theatres on Friday, September 5. His upcoming films include Before The Rains, The Japanese Wife, the Bengali film Antaheen and The Whisperers.
Bose is next 'gunning' for an action film.
"I have never done one," he says. "But after playing rugby for 25 years, I guess the time is right! I am looking at doing one next year in March."
Bose is as passionate about cinema as about issues concerning women, children and society. Rahul's mission is to erase discrimination and bring a stop to any kind of differentiation and prejudices that only weaken the weak.
He started an NGO, The Foundation whose one pointed agenda is to eradicate discrimination.
"And we need to start with ourselves," he says. "We will remove discrimination from our lives, our country and our world."
Besides he has been actively involved with other issues concerning women and children. The actor and the activist has actively worked with underprivileged Muslim women as a part of Akshara Centre for Women on the issue of secularism.
Rahul has made fourteen trips to the tsunami hit Andaman Islands as a part of immediate relief and rehabilitation in the beleaguered region. Bose facilitated, along with Akshara Centre and the Solidarity Network, the supply of vehicles, mobile phones and temporary relief materials for the villagers. He contributed to a permanent housing design initiative by coordinating with the urban development ministry and a team of Bombay architects, Shimul Zaveri and Associates.
