November 09, 2009, (Sawf News) - Abhishek Bachchan is set to prove his credentials by signing films with challenging roles. The latest is the lead in Neeraj Pandey (A Wednesday) helmed heist film Special Chabbis.
To be produced by Balaji Films, the film is based on the slick 1987 daylight robbery at Tribhovandas Bhimji Zaveri jewelery store at Opera House, with Abhishek, 33, playing the role of the daring jewelry robber.
The conman booked a room in a plush hotel of Mumbai under the name of Mohan Singh. During his stay at the hotel he interviewed and recruited 26 men to pose as income tax officials to raid the upscale jewelry store. It is not known if Mohan Singh was the real name of the man but it is believed that he belonged to UP and was in his mid-thirties.
Neeraj confirmed that Abhishek Bachchan is the lead in his film, "I can't deny that Abhishek is on board but I want to get some other key members of the cast in place before I make a formal announcement."
Neeraj says the film "would be more in the nature of a caper than a thriller."
Filming will begin in mid 2010, after Neeraj and Abhishek are free from their current projects.
Special Chabbis will be shot in Chandigarh, Delhi, Kolkata and Mumbai. Neeraj earlier said the film will have three songs - one of them will be lip-synced and two part of the background score.
Abhishek started filming for Ashustosh Gowarikar's Khele Hum Jeejaan Se with co-stars Deepika Padukone and Sikander Kher in Goa on November 7. The Goa shoot will last two months said Abhishek.
Scandal story:
Mohan Singh interviewed his 26 accomplices in the heist at the hotel inquiry counter between 10am to 5pm. In the advertisement, which was booked at Bandra by a person by the name Rajkumar, who gave a Santa Cruz address, candidates were asked to bring their bio-data, passport-size photographs and certificates.
On March 19, 1987, Mohan Singh arrived at the TBZ store with the hired hands in a rented coach. He showed his papers to the proprietor, Pratap Zhaveri, and entered the store.
During the thirty minute operation, he positioned his acting staff of 26 on the two floors of the shop. Customers were asked to remain seated. He collected various pieces of jewelry randomly, placed them inside different zip-locks and stapled them with slips that had Government seal on them. He then stashed the jewelry in a suitcase and walked out instructing the acting staff to wait for him as he makes a visit to another shop. Soon after his departure the proprietor suspected fowl play and called the police.
Mohan Singh returned to his hotel in the coach and asked the driver to wait for 10 minutes, but he never returned.
Police questioned the 26 recruits and found out that many of them were the serving Govt officials.
