November 10, 2009, (Sawf News) - Akshay Kumar convinced Priyadarshan to make their upcoming comedy, Khatta Meetha, more wholesome and grounded in reality.
To begin with the film was based on Priyadarshan's 1988 drama Vellanakalude Nadu, which revolves around the road mafia and corruption in the construction business in general.
Akshay recommended expanding the story to include the notorious 2009 murder of Bihar PWD engineer Yogendra Pandey whose body was found on June 18, 2009. An upright officer, Pandey was apparently killed by the vested interests who control the lucrative but highly corrupt business of road construction in Bihar.
Akshay plays the murdered engineer's colleague who uncovers the bloody trail, and Makrand Deshpande will play the murdered engineer.
Confirming the news Priyadarshan says, "My film has now become the story of Bihar's road mafia. Makrand Deshpande plays the murdered engineer while Akshay plays his colleague."
In a 90 day start-to-finish schedule, the film is being shot in Baramati, Maharashtra.
"I think I'll be doing this kind of a mixture of social comment and satire more often. In Khatta Meetha we took up a very serious and disturbing crime situation in Bihar but treated it lightly. No one wants to watch grim films anymore," Priyan told TOI.
The film additionally stars South actress Trisha.
