November 26, 2009, (Sawf News) - Ranbir Kapoor is high up on Mani Ratnam's short list for a lead role in Azan, a film focused on Muslim culture.
Interestingly, Ranbir plays a Sikh in Rocket Singh - Salesman of the Year.
Ranibr's industry ranking has risen following the success of Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani with co-star Katrina Kaif.
There were reports of Ranbir and Imtiaz Ali coming together but Ali quashed the rumors saying he does not even have a script ready for his next movie.
A source told TOI that, "After seeing Ranbir's progress as an actor, Mani sir is keen to have him in the lead role in the film."
Talking about the film the source added, "This is a pro-Muslim film which will portray Muslims in a positive light. The title of the film is the name of the lead character as he will be born during Azan."
Ratnam is still scripting the film, work on which will begin after he wraps up Aishwarya Rai and Abhishek Bachchan starrer, Raavana in May 2010. Filming will begin in August 2010.
Ranbir is currently in Bangkok filming for Siddharth Anand helmed, Nadiadwala Grandsons Entertainment' romcom Anjaana Anjaani, with co-star Priyanka Chopra. Ranbir and Siddharth earlier teamed up for Yash Raj Productions' Bachna Ae Haseeno.
Azan is the first call in the morning to Muslim prayer and the person performing the Azan is called the muezzin.
