Cole's Fight For This Love went to the top of the charts, selling more than 290,000 copies ahead of a new album to be released today.
The song became the fastest-selling single of the year and Cole said the result put "a permanent smile on her face".
The Girls Aloud singer said: "I'm just getting over the fact I have recorded my solo record and now it's number one. I can't take this all in. It's hard for me to put into words how I feel. I have this permanent smile on my face."
