November 20, 2009, (Splash News) - The sequel to Twilight has smashed the US box-office record for midnight screenings.

The Twilight Saga: New Moon brought in a staggering $26.27 million for overnight showings, new figures have revealed.

The movie, which stars heart-throb actor Robert Pattinson, broke the record set by Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince in July.

The Potter flick earned $22.2 million in overnight showings on July 15.

Paul Dergarabedian, president of Hollywood.com Box-Office, said New Moon's overnight take 'portends an opening weekend that could be one of the biggest of the year'.

The Twilight films are adapted from a series of vampire-based fantasy novels by American author Stephenie Meyer.

They chart a period in the life of Isabella Swan, played by Kristen Stewart, who falls in love with 104-year-old vampire Edward Cullen, portrayed by Pattinson.

The series of books has sold more than 85 million copies worldwide and been translated into more than 38 different languages across the globe.

After New Moon and Half-Blood Prince, the films that earned the most in midnight screenings are The Dark Knight ($18.5 million), Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith ($16.9 million) and Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen ($16 million).
