Mayer, who is on tour in Australia, called the album a "handbook on heartbreak". Award-winning Taylor Swift collaborated on the disc.
Andrea Bocelli's My Christmas came in at No. 2 on the Billboard 200. The Italian tenor this weekend kicks off a US tour with a guest appearance by Australian songstress Delta Goodrem in Florida.
Norah Jones's The Fall came in third.
