April 29, 2009, (Sawf News) - Kate Winslet says she was impressed with how good she looked nude in The Reader, but emphasizes that it wasn’t her real self and glamour in magazines and films is largely make believe.

Winslet, the cover story for UK’s June edition of Marie Claire, says in the accompanying interview:

‘I do think it’s important for young women to know that magazine covers are retouched. People don’t really look like that. In films I might look glamorous, but I’ve been in hair and make-up for two hours. With the nudity in The Reader, for example, even I was like, “Damn, I look good.” It was a bit of body make-up. I don’t believe in pretending those things don’t go on.’

Winslet, 33, recalls that she was chubby at school and her nickname was Blubber and the other pupils would lock her in the art cupboard.

‘I was bullied for being chubby. Where are they now!’ she half jokes.

‘Oh, I had, “No one will ever fancy me!”,’ she says. ‘I had that well into my teens. Even now I do not consider myself to be some kind of great, sexy beauty. I don’t mind the way I’m ageing. No reason to panic just yet. I think I look my age, and that’s fine.'

Winslet is disappointed that her sophistication and accent often eclipse her humble origins.

"We were supported through the majority of my schooling by an organization called the Actors' Charitable Trust."
