Winslet carried a clutch purse with her initials KW in jewels at the Bambi Film Awards in Berlin. She was awarded a bronze and gold Bambi for best international actress in acknowledgment of her performance in The Reader.
Winslet, 34, was described as "an actress who doesn't just slip into her roles but rather puts herself into the soul of her roles".
The actress said she treasured the experience of working with the German cast and crew. She said: "They had a really wonderful sense of humor even in the face of some brutal filming hours."
A German comedian, Michael Mittermeier, later commended her: "Kate Winslet, you're the first person from England to ever say we Germans have humor. Thank you, thank you!"
