The two have been seen spending nights at hotels, instead of Britney's mansion in Calabasas, and cruising around aimlessly looking grim faced, with Britney even spotted crying while speaking to someone over the phone.
According to x17online.com, Britney yelled at Jason recently while the two were at Fred Segal, for having left her alone in the store café to chat outside on his cell phone.
On Tuesday, the couple shacked up at the Chateau Marmont and went on an aimless drive before returning to the hotel. During the drive Britney was photographed crying while talking to someone over her cell phone.
There have been earlier reports of friction between the couple. While Britney was touring Australia in November, Trawick, 37, was rumored to have turned down her marriage proposal; she in turn asked him to return home to the US.
The Spears camp strongly denied the speculation which completely subsided when the two spent Britney's 28th birthday together on December 2.
A source then said: "Britney is very happy to spend the day with Preston and Jayden. The kids know it's her birthday … [They] are very excited about Britney's cake too."
Trawick is credited with having helped Spears turn her life around after she lost custody of her two sons to ex-husband Kevin Federline in October 2007. She subsequently landed in the hospital on psychiatric hold for her erratic behavior and was placed under a conservatorship.
