October 22, 2009, (Sawf News) - Topping the list of Nissan concept cars on display at the 2009 Tokyo Motor Show which opened on Wednesday is the Leaf EV which is slated for global launch and volume production in 2010.
Unlike Toyota, which is sharply focused on hybrid technology, and Honda, which is vigorously pursuing fuel cell technology, Nissan is banking on an all electric approach – zero emission plug in cars.
Nissan's CEO, Carlos Ghosn predicts electric cars will constituted 10 percent of global auto sales.
"The electric car and zero emissions are winners in our industry," says Mr. Ghosn. "Nissan will make the battery technology their core business."
Nissan, Japan's third largest automaker, will target its Leaf electric at the mass market by keeping the price affordable. Though a price is yet to be fixed, Nissan says the car will cost no more than a typical family sedan.
The all electric Leaf is no golf cart. The five passenger car will be able to achieve speeds up to 90 mph and comes equipped with airbags, IT and advanced navigation systems.
The navigation screen will support the driver by displaying range autonomy areas and battery-charging spots with a touch of a button.
The leaf will have a range of 100 miles per charge under average, everyday driving conditions.
Its battery will charge 4-8 hours on a 220V home charging unit. At quick charge stations it will charge to 80% in about 26 minutes.
