November 14, 2009, (Sawf News) - Fat grafting for breast augmentation may not be the right choice for you and should only be used for breast reconstruction, say some aesthetic surgeons.
Dr. Patrick Proffer, a Amarillo, TX, based plastic surgeon, tells News Channel 10 that breast augmentation with fat "can form cysts, and just areas of irregularity that will often times require unnecessary and costly and not needed work up to assess what those areas actually are."
Lack of proper communication between specialists involved in the procedure can also prove to be a challenge.
"In today's world where people move around frequently, there's not a lot of good communication between the radiologist doing that mammogram and a surgeon doing the procedure and it may lead to unnecessary procedures," Proffer says.
Other doctors that News Channel 10 spoke with seem to agree.
However, Dr. Proffer says he will consider the option of fat grafting in breast reconstruction following cancer surgery.
A task force set up by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons recently gave its nod to the use of 'fat grafting' for breast augmentation.
Fat grafting has so far been used to smoothen creased and sunken areas of the face and add fullness to the lips and cheeks.
The technique involves harvesting fat from areas where it is in excess - like the abdomen, hips, thighs, or buttocks - and re-implanting it elsewhere to plump up an area for cosmetic and aesthetic purposes.
Women who have reservations about saline or silicone gel breast implants are inclined to favor fat grafting.
When used for breast augmentation, the re-implanted fat is drawn from the buttocks which appeals to some women.
Some of the fat re-implanted is reabsorbed within a few months. Depending on the experience of the surgeon, the patient and some other factors in the body, 20 to 95 percent of transferred fat can be reabsorbed!
