LONDON (AFP) - Bridge signed a new, four-year contract with the English champions last week, just a fortnight after the birth of his son Jaydon.
As if that wasnt enough cause for celebration in the Bridge household, the England defender has been handed a rare chance to start a match for Chelsea in Tuesdays Champions League match against Levski Sofia at Stamford Bridge.
Bridge has found it impossible to hold down a regular place in Mourinhos side for the last two years as William Gallas, Asier Del Horno and now Cole have all been chosen ahead of him.
But the former Southampton player was always determined to fight for his place and said: "It was difficult when Ashley turned up because he is a great player.
"He's brilliant and everyone knows he is one of the best left-backs in the world but I dont see myself just sitting behind him.
"I don't see myself as second choice. I'm happy with the way I have been playing and now I've signed a new contract I am hoping to get more chances to play."
Cole, who is being rested against Levski, is likely to be restored to the team for Sunday clash with Arsenal, but new father Bridge is convinced he can win the fight - if he can stay awake long enough.
"The way it looks at the moment Ashley will come back in at Arsenal. All I can do is play well and the manager will have to give me reasons for leaving me out," he said.
"I talked to Jose before I signed the contract. He's been happy with the way I have playing and that is the response I want from him.
"It's topped my week off after the birth of my baby boy as well. Hes doing really well and so is his mum Vanessa.
"I'm only getting little bits of sleep, just three or four hours a night, but its amazing to go home to."
