November 18, 2009, (Sawf News) - Google is expected to show an early version of its Chrome OS a press event at a press event in the company's Mountain View campus on Thursday, November 19.
The press event will provide "an update on our progress with Google Chrome OS" and include demos and "launch plans for next year," according to an invitation extended to GigaOm.com.
A launch next year could well involve the release of an early beta at the event or later this year.
Google announced that it was working on the Chrome open source OS in July 2009. Based on the Linux, Chrome is expected to be a light weight OS optimized for use on Netbooks.
It is expected to be optimized for cloud computing using Google's Chrome browser, with most application running within the browser off the Internet, not from computer storage disks.
By making Chrome OS open source, Google is aiming for robustness and wider acceptance and hoping to repeat the success of Android, its open source smart phone OS that has been readily lapped up by smart phone manufacturers and service providers.
Not all experts are convinced that Google has the application suite to go with cloud computing. Google Apps, its cloud based alternative to Microsoft Office, continues to be functionality challenged and has yet to gain corporate acceptance.
There is also doubt about the wisdom of an OS that targets Netbooks, sales for which have slowed down this year making market watchers wonder if the surge last year was driven more by recession than the value that they pack.
