February 10, 2010, (Sawf News) - Google will offer broadband speeds that are 100 times faster than those available today in the US to select communities across the country, in a bid to improve the internet and its penetration.

Competitively priced 1 Gbps broadband connections over optical fiber will be offered to communities ranging from 50,000 to 500,000 people.

The company's new initiative was announced by product managers Minnie Ingersoll and James Kelly over a blog post on Wednesday, February 10.

"We're planning to build and test ultra high-speed broadband networks in a small number of trial locations across the United States," they wrote.

"Through our trial, we hope to make a meaningful contribution to the shared goal of delivering faster and better Internet for everyone," Ingersoll and Kelly added.

The Google developed "open access" network will give users "the choice of multiple service providers."

The Mountain View, California based company has invited communities around the country willing to participate in the trial to come forward by March 26.

Welcoming Google's initiative, Federal Communications Commission (FCC) chairman Julius Genachowski said the FCC's National Broadband Plan "will build upon such private-sector initiatives."
