ROME (AFP) - The new laws ushered in by the municipality include bans on drinking, eating, as well as shouting and sleeping near the city's famed historic sites and ruins, the daily Il Messaggero reported.
Those caught by authorities in these acts can be fined 50 euros (80 dollars), it said.
The Italian capital's historic monuments, which draw millions of tourists every year, are often littered with garbage at the end of the weekend.
The city's new mayor, Gianni Alemanno, was elected April 28, taking the mayoral office out of left-wing control for the first time in 15 years.
The municipality has underscored that cities including Florence and Venice, which are governed by the left, have already implemented such laws.
Rome has set aside 600,000 euros (more than 950,000 dollars) to cover the extra hours municipal police will have to work to enforce these laws, Ansa agency reported.
