Sawf News 26 Sep 2006 - Finally emerging from the larger than life shadow of his illustrious father Abhishek Bachchan is winning accolades. However, he is also courting controversies, albeit unwittingly. Even as Asian newspaper Eastern Eye crowned him the ‘Sexiest Asian 2006,’ Lucknow-based Urdu poet and co-actor in Umrao Jaan said he found the star to be arrogant.
Gouri Sharma, who compiled the list for Eastern Eye said that Abhishek emerged on top because he appealed to the 'thinking woman' and that he has stepped out of his father's shadow and is now an actor in his own right. The young actor's father, was ranked way behind and lay 16th in the list.
When asked for his response, the 30-year-old actor told CNN-IBN on Monday, that he was pleasantly surprised. “Oh God, really? That's interesting. Shocking actually. Are people blind? But wow, I would like to thank everyone. I don't agree with them, but it is sweet," he said in a press statement.
Meanwhile, The Times of India on Monday carried a special interview with Lucknow-based Anwar Nadeem who plays Mirza Hadi Ruswa in JP Dutta's forthcoming film Umrao Jaan. Recounting his brush with the main actors he told the newspaper: Aishwarya Rai bahut shaista hai (she is very refined) but "Abhishek se mein dubbing ke dauran mila (I met Abhishek during the dubbing) and I must say, as he shook hands with me I couldn't help noticing his well-sculpted physique. But his arrogance overshadowed his class."
Only last weekend, there were media reports suggesting that the successful actor had been throwing his weight around and was insisting on including Ash in the movies he signed. While Bachchan insists she is just a friend, there were speculations that he has a soft spot for her.
An industry insider revealed that after his newfound success in Karan Johar’s Kabhi Alvida Na Kahena, there have been some changes in his personality and he can be seen riding his fame.
It may be recalled that Bachchan made his debut in J.P.Dutta's Refugee along with Kareena Kapoor in 2000, but the movie was not a hit. He went on to do many more movies, without creating ripples at the box-office. However, his performance in Mani Ratnam's Yuva saw him emerge as an actor of repute.
In 2004 he starred in Yash Raj’s Dhoom and this film is considered the first hit of his career. In 2005 he shot to fame with four consecutive hits, namely Bunty Aur Babli, Sarkar, Dus and Bluffmaster. His recent release Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna is making waves at the box office.
