January 13, 2009, (Sawf News) - Aamir Khan's Taare Zameen Par (2007) is not amidst the 9 foreign-language films short listed for an Oscar in the Best Foreign Film category at the 81st Academy Awards.
The short listed films are:
- "The Class" (France)
- "Waltz With Bashir" (Israel)
- "Revanche" (Austria)
- "The Necessities of Life" (Canada)
- "The Baader Meinhof Complex" (Germany)
- "Departures" (Japan)
- "Tear This Heart Out" (Mexico)
- "Everlasting Moments" (Sweden)
- "3 Monkeys" (Turkey)
The selecting procedure involved a Los Angeles based committee of several hundred members who viewed the 65 submissions and picked out six out of them. Remaining three films were picked out by the Foreign language executive committee to prevent any oversights.
The five nominees will be announced on January 22 after special committees in New York and Los Angeles view the short listed films.
Taare Zameen Par, Aamir Khan's directorial debut film, tells the story of eight year old Ishaan (Darsheel Safary) who suffers greatly until a teacher (Aamir Khan) identifies him as dyslexic.
The Walt Disney Company has bought the home video rights for distribution of an international edition DVD of TZP for future release in North America, the United Kingdom, and Australia. This is the first time an international studio has bought the video rights of an Indian film.
