Films that raked in big moolah in 2005!

Bollywood pundits are at it again. With 2005 being counted as one of the more successful years in the recent career of the Hindi film industry – the profits were counted in hundred of crores of rupees by several production houses – they are now setting their sights on the blockbusters which are bound to crack all the bank codes in 2006. 2005, by all accounts, has been a golden year for Bollywood with the flood of VCDs, television channels fighting to show the best films at high prices and a large number of films booking excellent business. Amitabh Bachchan’s Bunty Aur Babli, Sarkar, Paheli, Waqt and Black raked in big moolah. Salaam Namaste, No Entry, Maine Pyar Kyun Kiya, Dus, Parineeta and many other films made crores of rupees for the producers. While Paheli is India’s official entry to the Oscars, Black has earned international honour by being selected among Time Magazine’s best films of 2005 by renowned critic Richard Corliss. It has earned the fifth place in this prestigious list. Corliss described Black as the ‘ultimate Bollywood love story’!

And films that may beat this fabulous record in 2006!

Here is a list of movies that are expected to better this performance in metro as well as small town India – and in the international arena – in 2006! First on the list is Rakeysh Om Prakash Mehra’s Rang De Basanti, which will benefit from Aamir Khan’s year-end wedding to Kiran Rao in a hill resort near Mumbai. The theme of the movie is attractive and will no doubt attract young Indians. Next comes Raj Kumar Hirani’s laugh riot Munnabhai, MBBS – 2 that promises to make viewers laugh with great abandon. Karan Johar’s mush movie Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna, shot in New York is also awaited eagerly and will benefit from the fact that Big B will probably make one of his rare appearances at its premiere. Rakesh Roshan’s Krrish is expected to be the record breaker of the year with Hrithik making a stunning comeback after a year’s sabbatical to learn Martial Arts to perfect his performance in this film. Priyanka Chopra is his co-star in this new Matrix mania flick. Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Saawaria launches Anil Kapoor’s daughter Sonam and Rishi Kapoor’s son Ranbir apart from its lead stars – so it will create some waves. Farhan Akhtar’s Don, Suraj Barjatya’s Vivah, Nikhil Advani’s Salaam-e-Ishq, Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s Eklavya, Kunal Kohli’s Fanaah, Sanjay Gadhvi’s Dhoom 2, J P Dutta’s Umrao Jaan, Vishal Bharadwaj’s Othello, Deepa Mehta’s Water and Meera Nair’s Namesake are counted among the movies which Indians will await with bated breath as 2006 unfolds!
