April 09, 2009, (Sawf News) - Bollywood star Akshay Kumar’s wife, Twinkle Khanna, was arrested by the Vakola police, in Mumbai after she surrendered in the presence of her lawyer Bhairav Choudhary.
She was later released on a bail of Rs 950/- ($20).
Twinkle informed the police that her husband, who is currently out of Mumbai, will present himself before the police on his return on Monday.
Assistant commissioner of police (Vakola division) Arvind Mahabdi told the press:
‘‘It was a bailable offence and we released her on a bail of Rs 950 at the police station itself. We are now waiting for Akshay.’’
A case was registered against the couple because Twinkle unzipped Akshay’s jean while he was on the ramp for Tarun Tahiliani's Levi's show in Mumbai during, Lakme Fashion Week.
Akshay, who is brand ambassador for Levi's since 2008, was promoting Levi’s 'Live Unbuttoned' campaign.
A female model was to unzip the hunky 41-year-old Bollywood star but Akshay gestured the model off and instead asked Twinkle, who was watching him strut his stuff from the front row, to do the honors.
Anil Nair, who claims to be a “social activist,” complained to the police that Akshay performed an "obscene" act in full public view.
It is not unusual for Bollywood actors to be slapped with obscenity charges by “activists.” Madhu Sapre and Milind Soman were held for obscenity in a sports shoe commercial. Pooja Bhatt was held and released on bail in a case involving a poster of her film, Rog.
Shilpa Shetty and Reema Sen faced a rap for semi-nude posters. Mallika Sherawat was hauled before the court for obscenity at a new year’s event in the city.
