May 18, 2009, (Sawf News) - Aamir Khan’s critically acclaimed 1989 film Raakh, which went practically unnoticed because of a low key release and Aamir’s relative anonymity then, is being re-released in a manner befitting the star.
The dark and disturbing crime drama followed the 1988 super hit, Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak, which launched Aamir’s very successful Bollywood career.
In Raakh Aamir plays a young man who, after witnessing the public humiliation and abuse of a female friend (Supriya Pathak), vows to avenge her by going after the hoodlums responsible. He is guided by a burnt out, cynical cop (Pankaj Kapur), who shows Aamir the ropes as well as the realities of vigilante life.
"Back then Raakh got a six-print release in three cities. Not many people were aware of the film then - but over the years it has become a cult among film buffs," says a spokesperson for the production company which is releasing the film.
Digitally re-mastered prints of Raakh, which won two national awards, will be released in theatres across India on June 12, with a DVD release in mid-August, followed by a satellite premiere.
