LOS ANGELES (AFP) - The sequel to "Jackass" is the second film spun off Knoxville's MTV reality show and on its debut weekend raked in 28.1 million dollars, estimated box office tracker Exhibitor Relations Co.
"Jet Li's Fearless" debuted in second place. The martial arts epic grossed about 10.6 million dollars.
Last week's winner, "Gridiron Gang," came in third, ahead of several debuts. The story of Los Angeles youth delinquents who took inspiration from their American football coach brought in some 9.7 million dollars.
The World War I aerial dogfight film "Flyboys" debuted in fourth place with about 6.0 million dollars, the box office tracker said.
In fifth place was "Everyone's Hero," about a youngster who crosses the United States during the 1932 World Series to return a baseball bat to Babe Ruth. The late Christopher Reeve directed the G-rated animated feature, which brought in about 4.8 million dollars.
A film noir mystery, "The Black Dahlia," directed by Brian De Palma, slipped from second place to sixth, bringing in about 4.4 million dollars.
"All the King's Men," modeled on Louisiana political kingpin Huey Long, debuted in seventh place, despite performances by Kate Winslet and Sean Penn, with about 3.8 million dollars.
Rounding out the top 12 were: "The Covenant" at 3.3 million dollars, "The Illusionist" with 3.28 million dollars; "Little Miss Sunshine" pulling in 2.9 million dollars; "Invincible" at 2.6 million dollars; and "The Last Kiss" with 2.5 million dollars.
Together, the top 12 films made some 81.9 million dollars, off almost seven percent compared to the 87.9 million dollars grossed during the same weekend last year.
Final figures are to be released Monday.
