In the film Beckinsale is featured as a Washington, DC political journalist Rachel Armstrong, who writes an explosive story about a government scandal in which she reveals the name of a covert CIA agent (Vera Farmiga).
When a special government prosecutor (Matt Dillon) demands she divulge her source, she refuses and finds herself behind bars, struggling to defend the principles she has based her career upon. Noah Wyle portrays the lawyer placed in charge of defending her. David Schwimmer plays Beckinsale's husband and Angela Bassett is the supportive editor in chief at the Washington newspaper where Beckinsale's character works.
The film parallels the case of Valerie Plame, whose status as a CIA agent was exposed in the media after her husband, Ambassador Joe Wilson, wrote a 'New York Times' op-ed piece charging the Bush administration with manipulating intelligence to justify the invasion of Iraq.
Nothing But The Truth was filmed in Memphis, Tennessee starting in 2007. The Yari Film Group production is rated R for language, some sexual material and a scene of violence.
The film premiered at Toronto Film Festival on September 8, 2008 and will be released in select theaters, first in New York, on December 19, 2008, followed by other locations.
