The word giallo is Italian for "yellow" and alludes to a series of cheap paperback mystery/crime pulp novels with trademark yellow covers from which the genre emerged.
The film follows an American Stewardess (Emmanuelle Seigner) and an Italian Detective (Adrien Brody), who team up in a race against time to find her sister. The sister has been abducted by a maniacal serial killer (Byron Deidra) known only as "Yellow," who has been disfiguring and is murdering beautiful women.
Not being good looking himself, Yellow felt rejected while growing up in an orphanage. He now abducts beautiful women and kills them after abusing them mentally and physically. He cleverly discards their bodies. He goes after women who are tourists and will have difficulty defending themselves.
After killing an Asian exchange student he kidnaps fashion model Celine (Elsa Pataky). Celine's sister Lindia (Emmanuelle Seigner) who is a sharp and beautiful flight stewardess comes to Torino to spend time with Celine. When Celine doesn't show up to meet Lindia as planned, Lindia informs the police. The cops are not interested in her case and they refer her to inspector Enzo Lavia (Adrien Brody), who is perceived as an eccentric detective. On hearing about the case he is reminded of this killer, Yellow, he's been hunting for sometime now.
The film, which was shot in Italy, opens in theaters on September 4, 2009.
