Kirsten Haglund, Miss America 2008, placed the crown on Stam's head at the annual pageant hosted by Mario Lopez and broadcast live on TLC.
Stam, 22, a communications major at the University of Indianapolis, also got a $50,000 scholarship.
In an innovation, the top four finalists were selected on the basis of votes cast by viewers.
