February 23, 2009, (Sawf News) - Sean Penn won his second Oscar for actor in a leading role at the 81st Academy Awards on Sunday, February 22 at the Kodak Theater in Hollywood.
Penn earlier won an Oscar for his performance role in Mystic River (2003).
"You commie homo loving sons of guns!" he said at the start of his acceptance speech.
"I did not expect this but… and I want it to be very clear that I do know how I hard I make it to appreciate me often," he joked alluding to his controversial outspokenness and sometimes violent run ins with the paparazzi press.
Before closing his speech, the activist actor, took the opportunity to champion gay rights saying:
"To those who saw the signs of hatred as our cars drove in tonight...I think it is a good time for those who voted for the ban against gay marriage to sit and reflect and anticipate their great shame and the shame in their grand children's eyes if they continue that way of support.
"We got to have equal rights for every human," he said to cheers."
