Established in 1998, Baby Phat and its designer Kimora Lee Simmons, created a unique identity in the fashion world, one combining high style and hip-hop. The Baby Phat line is characteristically flamboyant, colorful, and bright. Simmons and her talent have earned a steady following which includes no less than Paula Abdul, Britney Spears and Alicia Keys. The look is young, urban, and luxurious. And preferably not for the faint of heart.

This year’s collection favored oranges, reds, olives, and browns, unusual choices of color for the spring. Silhouettes were loose on top, tight on bottom.

Baby Phat’s suits included a short one-button jacket paired with cigarette pants that ended at the knee and a gray office number, belted at the waist with matching pants.

Dresses were loose, flowing, and vibrant, with low necklines and uneven hemlines. They were worn with footless tights in bright colors.

Swimwear, sure to be popular when the weather warms up, included one-piece suits in olive and brown, low necklines with high-cut legs and punctuated with a lattice design in the middle.

Shorts were short in length and topped with loose tunics that exposed the midriff.

Tying the collection together was the designer’s choice of accessories. Almost every outfit making its way down the catwalk was defined by fingerless leather gloves and a large, two-handled handbag.

With this collection, we see a fairly young label build on its already growing reputation for youthfulness, confidence, and cosmopolitan style. And as with every show, Simmons walked down the runway accompanied by her children, who carried flowers given to them by an onlooker.
