Paris fashion: McQueen's dramatic summer silhouette
Posted on Friday, October 06, 2006 (EST)
Designer Alexander McQueen's collection struck a slightly theatrical note, as he redefined the silhouette for summer to the musical accompaniment of a string ensemble.

PARIS (AFP) - Retaining a dramatic poise and elegance throughout, the British designer deliberately widened hips, puffed up shoulders and rigidly molded the bust of his ready-to-wear pieces.

His models with chalky white faces paraded to the classical tones provided by the ensemble on the catwalk under the light of an enormous chandelier in Paris' Cirque d'Hiver, a permanent city circus top.

Transparent and long, a white dress was finely embroidered with flowers, while a mini-cape in feathers covered the shoulders. McQueen continued his fascination with birds elsewhere too.

Black birds adorned a long straight white dress with a long frock coat and bowler hat. Elsewhere he played with shape, generously curving hips or by giving sleeves a structured outline.

He also played with proportion for dresses and spectacular head dresses.

On Saturday, Paris ready-to-wear fashion week continues, with women's collections for spring-summer 2007 by Guy Laroche, Kenzo, Chloe, Hermes and John Galliano.
