27 Feb 2007 (Sawf News) - This year’s Academy Awards red carpet received a much-needed shot of color in bold and unusual shades. Actresses Nicole Kidman, Jessica Biel and Portia de Rossi chose dresses with halter necklines while presenter Gwyneth Paltrow stood out in an unusual gown that defies words.

Bold and the Beautiful

Presenter Nicole Kidman went for a bold red halter dress accented with an oversized bow at the neck by designer Balenciaga. While normally we never disapprove of anything Kidman wears, for some reason this didn’t quite meet our standards. Nicole has the body of an Aussie Glamazon, she can pull off any role and practically any dress. But this one, isn’t her fault. It’s as if the design team at Balenciaga said this isn’t fancy enough for the red carpet, let’s throw in a huge bow for good measure. It makes us feel like it’s choking Kidman to death. Either that or she is getting ready for her fifth birthday party. On top of which, the straightened, less-reddened locks make us pray she plans to go back to her natural color. Unless this is some covert move to hope Tom Cruise and wife Katie do not recognize her hair at the after-parties and start talking about Scientology. In which case, we understand completely!

Jessica Bismol

Actress Jessica Bismol, um, Biel has been wearing all the right trends of late. Pencil skirts, classy updos and tight figure-hugging dresses. An ex-model, she has the right body to carry off anything. Which makes us wonder why on earth she felt the need to resemble a walking bottle of pink liquid you quaff when you’re nauseous. Picking it from the de la Renta show doesn’t please us because it’s just not the right dress. The black belt can’t save her, it just completes the tragedy that is this outfit. Maybe her saving grace is the jewelry courtesy of Neil Lane. But then, it looks sad coupled with this wavy updo that tries to compete with the loud fuchsia hue of this number.

Also wearing a halter style was A-lister Portia de Rossi who carried off the look comparatively better than Kidman and Biel. Her dress was a deep blue shade courtesy of American designer Zac Posen. She was one of the few stars wearing a non-European couturier.

Paltrow in Posen

We want to say something nice about presenter Gwyneth Paltrow who made a strong choice in an apricot spider-web gown in tulle-and-chiffon also by designer Zac Posen, but we can’t. First off, why the obsession with fruit? With a daughter named Apple, and this expensive dress inspired by something you give mashed up to an infant who doesn’t have her teeth yet, we think living in England and being married to a musician is getting to you. We expected more from a former Oscar winner and an Estee Lauder cover girl. Somehow the bright lip color clashes with the extremely demure shaded gown, we think you took Apple’s red marker and drew in a smiling mouth. We want to look away and recall better days when you shined on the red rug.
