December 04, 2008, (Sawf News) - Tom Cruise says he bought an engagement ring for Katie Holmes shortly after their first date in 2005 and preempted Katie with his own marriage proposal.
The couple, who appears on split covers of the "Holiday/Reinvention" issue of T: The New York Times Style Magazine, fondly recall their instant romance and subsequent marriage in an accompanying interview.
"I knew I wanted to marry Kate when I met her," Cruise, 46, tells the magazine. "After our very first date, I was sure. At one point, I thought she was going to ask me to marry her first and I cut her off by changing the subject. I wanted to ask her."
Holmes told Cruise that as a little girl she dreamt of marrying him.
"I said I wouldn't want to disappoint her," Cruise says.
Holmes echoes similar sentiments saying:
"When I met Tom I was completely in love and, yes, I admired him growing up - he's Tom Cruise! … When I met him, he was so warm and I thought, Wow! You can be a superstar and a human being. He made me feel so amazing."
She asserts that she is no wallflower in his life.
"There's a misperception about me that I just became this wallflower, this woman who doesn't have any control of her life," she says. "And that's pretty wrong. From the very beginning, I've made choices in my life that have been very strong."
Holmes, who turns 30 on December 18, keeps herself insulated from tabloid gossip.
"I have too much to do," she says. "I'm a mom and an actress with a play to do every night. I can't pay attention to all that noise."
Holmes who started dating Tom Cruise in early 2005 gave birth to daughter Suri Cruise on April 18, 2006.
The couple married in a medieval castle near Rome on Saturday, November 18, 2006, in an evening ceremony attended by some of Hollywood's biggest stars.
