January 23, 2009, (Sawf News) - Three people have been detained in the Bahamas for an alleged attempt to extort $20 million from John Travolta over the death of this son.
Jett Travolta, the 16-year-old son of John Travolta and Kelly Preston, died while on vacation with the family in the Bahamas. Jett was found dead in the bathroom of their private suite at the Old Bahama Bay Resort on January 2.
Those arrested included, Obie Wilchcombe, a former Minister of Tourism in the Bahamas and a close friend of the Travolta family.
Wilchcombe had slammed the alleged extortion attempt terming it "a despicable act" while speaking to the media on Thursday. He was brought to the police station under the pretext of helping authorities to crack the case, a police source told TMZ.
He was subsequently "implicated" and taken into custody on Friday, January 23.
Also arrested on Friday was Tarino Lightbourne, the ambulance driver who drove Jett Travolta to the hospital. The police earlier issued an alert that he was wanted for attempted extortion and was "considered dangerous and should be approached with caution."
Sen. Pleasant Bridgewater, an attorney from Grand Bahama, is under detention for questioning since Thursday.
Authorities did not reveal what the alleged extortion involved.
