"He broke up with her when she got back from her European tour," a source told E! Online's Marc Malkin, who broke the story.
"They had some disagreements and decided to not continue to see each other," another source told People. "Jen is moving on with her life like she always does. She seems happy."
In a recent interview with UK's You magazine Aniston said, "Who ever said that every relationship has to last forever? That's hoping too much. I think every relationship is a world unto itself."
Aniston, 40, dated Mayer, 31, from April 2008 to middle of August 2008 when John reportedly dumped her with a text message that read "That's it - the end."
The couple later made up starting with a dinner date at New York City's romantic Il Mulino on Saturday, October 11.
Aniston first publically acknowledged her renewed relationship with John Mayer during an appearance on the Oprah Winfrey show that aired on Thursday, November 13.
Oprah asked her, "Dating John Mayer: Yes or no?"
"Yes," Jen responded immediately.
Aniston and Mayer faced cameras as a couple for the first time on Oscar night, with Aniston telling Gayle King they were 'very happy' together.
After the Oscars, the couple hit the Vanity Fair after party, where they reportedly locked lips several times through the night.
Speaking about their Oscar appearance as a couple during a phone in to Ryan Seacrest's Morning Show on KIIS FM, Mayer was asked what prompted him to accompany Aniston to the Oscars.
"At some point, you feel comfortable and say, 'This is the choice I want to make.'," he said.
