The star of Valkyrie appeared in Melbourne in some chunky-heeled Nike trainers, leading to speculation he was making an effort to redress the imbalance.
His former wife Nicole Kidman famously declared she would be able to again wear heels once they were no longer together, although the actress' height does set her apart by ordinary mortal standards.
But Cruise again appears to be battling a bit of height differential with Katie Holmes, 30.
The 47-year-old Cruise claims to be 170cm, or 5'7"; wearing the Nikes, however, he appeared suddenly to gain on his spouse, who stands 175cm, or 5' 9".
David Letterman once asked Holmes, who is in Melbourne to film Don't Be Afraid of the Dark: "I'm thinking that Tom Cruise has got the loveliest woman in the world. How does that happen, for God's sake? He's shorter than you are."
Holmes shot back: "'I think he's sexy."
