November 08, 2009, (Splash News) - A billboard photo of Paris Hilton was slapped with the word vacant, leaving the hotel heiress threatening to slap the advertiser with a lawsuit.
The New Zealand company, Media5, that posted the image was promoting vacant ad space.
Adam McGregor of Media5 said it was having a "bit of fun" and acting on the idea of a friend to use high-profile public figures to draw attention to the unsold display.
"We were thinking about using [former NZ foreign affairs minister] Winston Peters, but Paris is much prettier and she has a proven ability to laugh at herself," said McGregor. "We assume that the agency has taken care of the rights to the image of Paris, but we will ask the question."
Hilton's manager Jamie Freed said Media5 had not gained permission to use the image and can expect to hear from Hilton's attorneys.
McGregor played down the incident, saying, Media5 will take down the image if requested to do so. "We're not trying to offend anyone," he said.
