"I'm the George W. Bush of love: I may not have anything to show for myself now, but history will prove me a hero," he tweeted early Sunday morning.
About four hours earlier he had tweeted.
"I'm currently on drink 5. You know, that drink that takes you from "cunning ladykiller" to "your funny friend."
Mayer has dated Jennifer Love Hewitt (2002), Jessica Simpson (2006-7), Minka Kelly (2007) and Jennifer Aniston (2008).
Mayer, 32, released his fourth studio album, Battle Studies, on November 17, 2009.
