June 18, 2009, (Sawf News) - Fraxel laser treatment is fast becoming the preferred method to get rid of your acne scars. It uses lower energy fractional lasers to rejuvenate the skin instead of resurfacing it, minimizing healing downtime.

"What the Fraxel lasers do is give energy to the skin surface which is going to replace that scar tissue with new collagen and that will help even out the skin surface and really almost erase those scars," dermatologist Anne Chapas tells ABC News.

Fraxel laser treatment represents the latest advance in Laser resurfacing.

To begin with, Laser resurfacing was achieved using ablative lasers which vaporize the outermost layer of the skin in a precise and controlled way to a microscopic depth.

The skin then heals over a period of time, as new layers of collagen are produced. The resurfaced skin has a much healthier appearance especially in the case of sun damaged or acne scarred skin.

Fraxel laser treatment uses fractional lasers to remodel acne scars without the downtime of ablative resurfacing.

Fractional laser treatment, as the name suggests, exposes only a fraction (20%) of the treated area to pinpoints of laser light, leaving healthy skin in between the ablated areas, which facilitates more rapid healing.

Fractional treatment uses lower energy laser that wounds the skin, without vaporizing it, using microscopic pulses of light. The laser treats the layers of skin under the surface without damaging the surface too much

Over the course of several treatments scars are softened as the body regenerates the areas of microthermal wounding

The treatment stimulates collagen for up to 4 months and this new collagen regeneration lifts and supports the skin's surface. The generation of the new skin cells in combination with collagen stimulation will dramatically improve the appearance of acne scars.

The Fraxel family of products has three laser treatments, all delivering remarkable results with fast recovery. These treatments vary in aggressiveness, downtime, number of procedures needed and results.

The most aggressive treatment, Fraxel re:pair, can produce dramatic improvement for severely damaged skin. This is a single treatment procedure, but will require more downtime and after treatment wound care. It uses an ablative laser.

Less aggressive treatments, like Fraxel re:store or Fraxel re:fine, can produce significant results for mild to moderately damaged skin over the course of 3 to 6 treatments. Typically, there is no after treatment wound care with these treatments and downtime is minimal.

Fraxel re:store costs about $750 per treatment in the New York Area. Fraxel re:pair can cost between $4-6,000.
