July 12, 2009, (Sawf News) - A task force set up by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons recently gave its nod to the use of 'fat grafting' for breast augmentation.
Fat grafting has so far been used to smoothen creased and sunken areas of the face and add fullness to the lips and cheeks.
The technique involves harvesting fat from areas where it is in excess - like the abdomen, hips, thighs, or buttocks - and re-implanting it elsewhere to plump up an area for cosmetic and aesthetic purposes.
The technique was first pioneered in Germany in the late nineteenth century, for facial plastic surgery as well as breast augmentation.
The nod for use of 'fat grafting' for breast augmentation follows improvements in fat harvesting technology.
Robert Schwartz, one of the first plastic surgeons in Dallas to offer the technique for breast augmentation, tells Dallas News that the procedure is especially appealing to women who have reservations about saline or silicone gel breast implants.
"There's no implant. It's just you," Schwartz said. "Nothing will feel more natural than this."
When used for Breast augmentation, the re-implanted fat is drawn from the buttocks which appeals to some women.
"It's like killing two birds with one stone," says Mark, whose wife Melissa Hill of Mesquite underwent the procedure recently.
The procedure costs about $7,500 if you have surplus fat on your buttock; if the fat has to be drawn from the abdomen, hip, thighs, it can cost more.
Some of the fat re-implanted is reabsorbed within a few months. Depending on the experience of the surgeon, the patient and some other factors in the body, 20 to 95 percent of transferred fat can be reabsorbed!
