MONTREAL (AFP) - "We would rather be naked than wear fur," stated a banner draped around three women and a man who distributed pamphlets to curious passers-by midday, some who whistled their approval.
"The fur often comes from China where there are no laws ... They say it's rabbit fur, but often they skin cats and dogs," Martine MacDonald, a spokesperson for the group, told AFP.
The protest was organized by animal rights groups Global Action Network and PETA. They accuse China, one of the world's largest fur exporters, of using cat and dog pelts in the manufacturer of fur coats and accessories, and denounced Western importers of these products.
Temperatures usually fall below minus 15 degrees Celsius (five degrees Fahrenheit) in this Canadian metropolis in January, but the protestors were treated to a warm spell Thursday as thermostats climbed above zero (32 degrees Fahrenheit).
