PARIS (AFP) - Safina, the 14th seed, brushed aside Hana Sromova of the Czech Republic 6-0, 6-2 to become the first woman into the third round where she will take on either Slovenia's Katarina Srebotnik, the 24th seed, or America's Ashley Harkleroad.
Safin had been beaten by Chilean ninth seed Fernando Gonzalez in the gloom of Tuesday evening and then refused to attend the mandatory press conference.
The former world number one and Australian and US Open winner will now be fined for his no-show.
