STANFORD, United States (AFP) - The 31-year-old Sugiyama, of Japan, booked a second-round clash with France's Tatiana Golovin.

Sugiyama is ranked 19th in the world making her the highest ranked Asian female player ahead of world No 22 Li Na, of China.

Earlier Tuesday, Australian Samantha Stosur advanced with an easy 6-1, 6-3 victory over Ukrainian qualifier Olga Savchuk, while Serbian Jelana Jankovic downed American wild card Lilia Osterloh 7-5, 6-3.

In the second round, Jankovic will face three-time Stanford champion Kim Clijsters.

Taking the court later in the day for another first-round match will be fifth seed Daniela Hantuchova of Slovakia who battles American Shenay Perry.
